To make Indian businesses more competitive worldwide, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) announced a redesigned Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) Certification Scheme. The first phase will focus on MSMEs in the manufacturing industry, and the second phase will focus on MSMEs in the service sector.

In addition to motivating and incentivising MSMEs to pursue ZED Certification, the government aims to provide the resources and assistance to implement ZED practices. Reducing waste, increasing productivity, improving environmental awareness and saving energy are benefits MSMEs gain through the ZED Certification Scheme.

What is the purpose of the Zero Defect and Zero Effect Certification?

To encourage MSMEs, the Zero Defect and Zero Effect Certification Plan is a scheme that promotes ZED production and assessment. It provides MSMEs with the tools to produce high-quality goods by utilising cutting-edge technology. This helps improve efficiency and create high-quality products with minimal impact on the environment.

The MSMEs introduced the ZED Certification Scheme on 28 April 2022 to make Indian enterprises globally competitive and assist in gaining more access to funding. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are encouraged and incentivised to implement ZED practices through the ZED Certification Scheme. MSMEs can cut costs by obtaining ZED Certification. 

What are the benefits of the ZED Certification Scheme?

The government introduced the scheme to:

  • Recognise and encourage the use of high-quality products and services by SMEs.
  • Enable SMEs to learn new techniques for manufacturing and to manage their businesses.
  • Ensure the level of production increases significantly and help reduce product rejection and increase product quality.

How will they allow easy capital access?

The Director of MSMEs, Vinamra Mishra, said that ZED Certification would enable MSMEs to obtain credit on favourable terms from banks and bureaus and concessions for parcel special trains. Banks will offer a lower processing fee and some relaxation in the rate of lending to MSMEs with ZED certification to ease the loan procedure more convenient for small businesses.

Under the ZED plan, the government provides a subsidy to the MSME sector for the expenses incurred for obtaining the ZED certificate:

  • 80% for micro-businesses
  • 60% for small businesses
  • 50% for medium-sized businesses

Training and awareness initiatives are conducted across the country to spread the word about the Z-rating system and gain support from all industries. The government has incorporated the ZED certification method into industrial strategies.
